NCYSUR NHMRC Fellow comments on agressive medicinal cannabis marketing to youth
In a recent Research Focus for Connections, NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow Dr Carmen Lim shared her views on needed reforms to Australia's medicinal cannabis system. NCYSUR Emeritus Professor Wayne Hall also provided public comment in the media including articles for The Conversation.
Since then Carmen was interviewed for the ABC Radio Brisbane story by Kenji Sato "Hannah Wilson has quit medicinal cannabis but has been relentlessly targeted by advertisements". Carmen expressed her concerns that medicinal cannabis clinics are using increasingly aggressive marketing tactics to target vulnerable young people, with many advertisements either skirting legal grey areas or unambiguously illegal.
Also quoted was a Therapeutic Goods Administration spokesperson, who said reports of unlawful advertising were subject to robust assessment and investigation. "Advertisements for therapeutic goods must comply with the requirements in the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989," the spokesperson said. "Suspected breaches of advertising requirements can be reported via the TGA's online portal."
