Emeritus Professor Wayne Hall was recognised for his dedication and accomplishments since joining APSAD in 1989

NCYSUR Emeritus Professor Wayne Hall was selected by the APSAD Council and elected a Life Member by unanimous vote of the APSAD members attending the Annual General Meeting in November 2025.

Wayne joined APSAD in 1989 during his first year at NDARC, when he became Deputy Editor of the Society's scientific journal Drug and Alcohol Review. He served as Executive Director of NDARC from 1994 to 2001 when he moved to the University of Queensland to found the forerunner of his Addiction Neuroethics research group.

Wayne's influential leadership throughout his career has raised the profile and reputation of Australian addiction and mental health research internationally. He received the Order of Australia for his contributions to the evidence base for public-health oriented drug policy and was awarded an NHMRC Australia Fellowship for his work in addiction neuroethics that challenged the conventional wisdom of the addictions field in the USA.

In 2022, Wayne was recognised with APSAD's Senior Scientist Award for his outstanding contributions to the field as a social scientist. He continues to exemplify the values at the heart of APSAD in his lifelong commitment to evidence, public engagement, and maintaining high standards in the addictions field.

As Emeritus Professor at NCYSUR, Wayne continues to mentor and inspire the next generation of researchers. In November 2025, he was named as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher for the sixth year in a row, in recognition of his continuing global impact and influence on debates over the best policy options in responding to potential harms from cannabis, alcohol, tobacco, opioids and stimulants.

Congratulations Wayne!
