International report suggests binge drinking is a major contributor to serious alcohol-related harm that has been largely overlooked and underestimated.

NDRI Alcohol Policy Research Program Leader Professor Tanya Chikritzhs has co-authored a new international report examining the short- and long-term health impacts of binge drinking.

Authored with medical and public health researchers from Canada, Sweden and the United States, the ‘Binge Drinking: Acute Consequences and Lasting Impacts’ report  suggests binge drinking is a major contributor to serious alcohol-related harm that has been largely overlooked and underestimated.

The international report highlights that consequences from binge drinking extend well beyond the individual drinker with family violence, child neglect, lost productivity, crime and health care costs all closely tied to this drinking pattern. Enduring effects of binge drinking can influence the risk of dementia, alcohol dependence and chronic disease in later life.

The report was launched in the European Parliament in early March.
