On March 27, NDARC Professor Don Weatherburn will present on ‘The impact of the NSW Drug Court on health and social functioning’, describing the Court’s impact on reoffending, imprisonment, health and child protection. The presentation will examine the impact of the Drug Court on reconviction at 12 and 24 months post referral, imprisonment at case finalisation, and emergency department and hospital admissions and having had a child or children confirmed as at-risk of serious harm or placed in out-of-home care (OOHC) within five years of referral.

Correlates of smoking-induced deprivation and its impact on smoking cessation

Thursday, 3 April 2025, 3pm AEDT

The COVID-19 pandemic and cost-of-living crisis have heightened financial challenges, potentially motivating some individuals who smoke, especially those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, to quit smoking to reduce costs. However, financial stress may hinder quit attempts, and nicotine-dependent individuals may prioritise cigarettes over essentials like food.

In this NDARC-hosted seminar on April 3, Dr Ara Cho, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Public Health at the University of Queensland, will present trends in smoking-induced deprivation (SID), defined as reporting that spending money on cigarettes in the past six months resulted in insufficient money for household essentials such as food, across England, Canada, Australia, and the US from 2016 to 2022, and whether experiencing SID influences subsequent quit attempts and quit success.

The intersection of violence and drug use among women

16 April 2025, 2pm AWST

On April 16, NDRI will bring together three speakers from across the globe for its April webinar examining the intersection of violence and drug use among women. Women who use drugs are at an increased risk of gender-based violence and experience unique consequences from such violence.

Presenters at this webinar, which include Professor Gail Gilchrist from Kings College, Jade Lane from Burnet Institute and NDRI’s Dr Sam Colledge-Frisby, will share perspectives on how research in this space has evolved over time, the prevalence of gender-based violence and accessing of medical care among women who use drugs, and community-led responses to gender-based violence among women with histories of drug use.
