Researchers are seeking Australian residents to complete an anonymous online survey about recreational nitrous oxide use. The study aims to generate new insights to help inform harm reduction strategies.

The anonymous online survey is part of a university honours project investigating patterns of recreational nitrous oxide use.

To be eligible, participants must be aged 16 years or older and have consumed nitrous oxide within the past 12 months. They also need to have lived in Australia for at least 12 months.

The survey takes no longer than 20 minutes to complete and participants can enter an optional prize draw on completion.

The research forms part of the study, A cross-sectional survey investigating the prevalence and correlates of nitrous oxide dependence among a sample of Australians reporting recent use’. It is being conducted by Chief Investigators Dr Jodie Grigg, from Curtin University’s National Drug Research Institute, and Dr Sophie Haywood, from Curtin University, and Curtin Honours student Lochlan White.

The study aims to explore the prevalence of nitrous oxide dependence among a sample of Australians who have recently used nitrous oxide, and examine biological, psychological and social factors that may be associated with dependence.

Survey responses will help researchers, healthcare professionals and policymakers gain a deeper understanding of high-risk patterns of use and may help guide harm reduction strategies in Australia.
