Police custody and young people: Informing human rights responses

November 2023
Staff:

Dr Shelley Walker

Project description:

This ARC DECRA-funded project will focus on building new knowledge about Australian police custody and young people to inform evidence-based solutions that protect their human rights while detained to improve their safety and wellbeing and help prevent future avoidable deaths in custody.

Using an innovative study design in three Australian states, NDRI researcher Shelley Walker’s new research will provide sophisticated and empirically-informed national understandings of a process in the criminal justice process that, to date, has received little scholarly attention.

The research project builds on Shelley’s PhD research, undertaken jointly with NDRI and the Burnet Institute, which remains the only published Australian study examining the lived experiences of police custody for young people.
