NDRI researchers co-author major international publications

April 2023

NDRI Alcohol Policy Research Program Leader Professor Tanya Chikritzhs has co-authored a ground-breaking new report on the link between alcohol, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.

Authored with medical and public health researchers from Canada, the United States and Sweden, ‘Alcohol and Blood Pressure’ summarises the best scientific research and provides a state-of-the-art overview of alcohol’s substantial causal role in hypertension, the leading cause of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and dementia, concluding there is strong evidence alcohol use leads directly to elevated blood pressure and hypertension, without any safe level or protective effects.

Meanwhile, NDRI Research Fellow Dr Sam Colledge-Frisby was lead author of a new systematic review published in The Lancet Global Health updating approaches to preventing and managing harms among people who inject drugs (PWID).

Authored by a team of Australian and UK researchers, the review updated 2017 research into global coverage of harm reduction services that target PWID, including needle and syringe exchange programs, opioid agonist treatment, take-home naloxone programs, supervised consumption facilities, and drug checking services.
