HDR scholarships: Youth drinking, impact of AOD on ATSI people

April 2023

NDRI has scholarship opportunities available in Perth and Melbourne: an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) scholarship, and another focused on youth drinking trends.

The first provides support for a Master of Philosophy or PhD candidate who has a keen interest in the impact of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) on the social and emotional wellbeing of ATSI people. Possible projects could include:

  • Co-design of an AOD model of care in partnership with an Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Service to be embedded in clinical care
  • Developing a health promotion/education toolkit for AOD use during pregnancy and postnatal, or
  • Explore the relationship of alcohol and other drugs on the development and educational outcomes of Aboriginal children.

Funded by the Australian Research Council, the second is based at NDRI in Melbourne and focuses on identifying ways to ensure that recent declines in adolescent drinking are maintained and reinforced as these young people age.

Focused on young people in Australia, Sweden and the UK, PhD scholars will generate new knowledge on the trajectories of youth drinking into young adulthood, changing risk and protective factors for alcohol problems, and help develop new and effective harm prevention policies and interventions.
