Cracks in the Ice smartphone app provides more Australians with information about crystal methamphetamine (ice)

A smartphone app developed by researchers from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) at UNSW Sydney and National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) at Curtin University will allow more Australians to access trusted, evidence-based information and resources about crystal methamphetamine (ice).
The Cracks in the Ice smartphone app makes information from the Cracks in the Ice Online Toolkit available in a condensed user-friendly format, optimised for mobile devices.
Functional even when offline, the app will improve access for Australians who do not have reliable internet, including rural and regional residents.
NDARC’s Dr Louise Birrell said the app has resources for a number of groups in the community including family and friends, parents, teachers and health professionals.
“The app provides a range of evidence-based resources including fact sheets, guidelines and infographics covering the effects of ice, tips for how to stay safe, and information about where, when and how to get support,” Dr Birrell said.
“It was developed in collaboration with community members and people with lived experience to ensure it meets the needs of those seeking information and support.
“We’re pleased to extend the reach of Cracks in the Ice and provide more Australians with access to the resource in a convenient and accessible format.”
Users of the app can search for specific information, bookmark information and resources, and share content with friends, family and colleagues via email or social media.
Cracks in the Ice was launched on 3 April 2017 to provide communities with up-to-date and relevant information about methamphetamine, including the harms associated with use, and information about accessing services and support.
Cracks in the Ice is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health as part of the Government’s investment of $298 million over four years to combat illicit drug use under the National Ice Action Strategy.
The Cracks in the Ice smartphone app provides convenient mobile access to this information and makes resources available to more Australians, regardless of their location.
