Upcoming webinar: Addressing harmful alcohol and other drug use among Aboriginal Australians

May 2017

The Australian Indigenous Alcohol and Other Drugs Knowledge Centre (the Knowledge Centre) is hosting a free webinar on Thursday 11th May with guest presenters Associate Professor Ted Wilkes and Professor Dennis Gray, leaders of the Aboriginal Research Program at the National Drug Research Institute (NDRI).

The theme for the webinar is Harnessing good intentions: addressing harmful alcohol and other drug use among Aboriginal Australians. There are a variety of views about how to see a reduction in the harm that alcohol and other drugs (AOD) cause among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This webinar will discuss some of the issues around this, and how good intentions can be harnessed in achieving outcomes that are effective but equitable and respectful of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Key sub-topics to be discussed include:

  • patterns of use: the reality vs negative stereotypes
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander control of the pathways out of poverty and AOD-related harm
  • top-down policy and local responsiveness
  • areas of need
  • resourcing Aboriginal initiatives in an affluent society
  • constructive partnerships.

The webinar will run for approximately one hour, and is free to attend. No additional software is required to join the webinar, other than a stable internet connection. It is recommended that participants use headphones for improved sound quality.

The webinar will be held at:

  • 12pm AEDT (NSW, Vic and Tas)
  • 12pm AEST (Qld)
  • 11.30am ACST (SA)
  • 11.30am ACST (NT)
