PhD Enterprise Scholarship: High risk drinking among men, potential intervention periods and health promotion strategies to prevent the occurrence of, or change, risky drinking practices.

February 2023

NCETA are thrilled to announce that, in partnership with the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, we are offering a PhD Enterprise Scholarship to undertake research investigating high risk drinking among men, potential intervention periods and health promotion strategies to prevent the occurrence of, or change, risky drinking practices. The student will be co-supervised by Professor Jacqueline Bowden (NCETA, Flinders University), Associate Professor Michael Livingston (NDRI, Curtin University) and Professor James Smith (Flinders University). The successful applicant will also engage with Dr Skye McPhie (Alcohol and Drug Foundation).

The 3-year scholarship will be based at NCETA’s offices at Flinders University and will also include an internship at the Adelaide office of the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, giving the successful candidate an opportunity to develop their professional network and gain insight into practical research practices.

The project will include:

  • A review of the existing literature to understand the demographic and situational risk factors that lead to behaviours that increase risk of alcohol related harm among men
  • Statistical analysis of national datasets to understand factors associated with risky drinking among men and patterns over time
  • Interviews or surveys to understand at what stage of the life course might intervention be most helpful to prevent the occurrence of, or change, risky drinking practices.
