NDRI hosts US researchers for Beyond Violence training

March 2018

Targeted violence prevention programs designed specifically for women are lacking in Australia, and violent women offenders currently have limited opportunity to address their behaviour.

To help address this gap, the National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) and The Kirby Institute (UNSW) are leading an international collaboration to trial a gender-specific and trauma-informed intervention, Beyond Violence, for Australian women convicted of violent offences.

Beyond Violence was developed by renowned US psychologist Dr Stephanie Covington, and US researchers recently travelled to Perth to provide Beyond Violence facilitator training for staff involved in the trial and other interested parties. The two-day workshop, held at Curtin University, was attended by around 50 people from organisations including the Department of Justice, non-government organisations, and post-graduate students from Curtin University and the University of Western Australia.

Further information about the Beyond Violence trial is available on NDRI’s website.
