Birdiya Miya homelessness research project exhibition

February 2023

The Birdiya Miya Homelessness Research Project recently presented an exhibition of art, photography and film created by research participants to showcase the voice of those with experience of homelessness in Perth.

The research project is led by Wungening Aboriginal Corporation in partnership with the National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University and is supported by Lotterywest.

Throughout the research project, research participants have produced visual media related to their experience of homelessness, and this was showcased to invited guests including service providers, government representatives and participants of the project.

The project is doing research differently: it is the first time an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation has led a research project of this nature; and guided by a group of community elders, known as the Community Ownership Group, the project provides a platform for those with lived experience of homelessness in Perth to share their experiences through a range of media including photography, art, yarning and video.

The exhibition highlighted what researchers have captured in the project so far, ahead of the next stage which will involve researchers preparing and documenting their findings. It is anticipated findings from the research will inform government and service providers to better improve outcomes for rough sleepers in Perth.
