2017 Contemporary Drug Problems Conference: ‘Making Alcohol and Other Drug Realities’

International journal Contemporary Drug Problems held its fourth biennial conference from 23-25 August in Helsinki. Co-hosted by Finland’s National Institute for Health and Welfare, the conference organising partners also included NDRI, the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research (Aarhus University, Denmark), the Centre for Population Health (Burnet Institute), and the Department of Science and Technology Studies (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA).

The conference attracted 132 delegates from 21 countries and its three-day program featured papers on a wide range of topics such as drug consumption rooms, alcohol-related violence, cannabis policy, new psychoactive substances, school-based prevention programs, pleasure, tobacco plain packaging, ‘chemsex’, take-home naloxone, and neuroscientific accounts of addiction.

Keynote addresses were given by Professor Carol Bacchi (‘Deploying a poststructural analytic strategy: Political implications’), Drs Adam Winstock and Monica Barratt (‘The Global Drug Survey: Participatory methods and the making of safer drug realities’), and Dr Cameron Duff (‘Critical drug studies after the ontological turn’).
